HUMAN TRAFFICKING

I first became aware of this crime at the age of 18, during the summer of my first year of my career, where I participated in an International Cooperation Programme in Thailand, where I witnessed several attempts of recruitment of minors in the orphanage by a trafficking network. Since then and until now, my training, my interest and my deep commitment to its study and to the protection of their victims, have guided all my formal training and my professional career. Today, my greatest wish is to be able to continue helping and contributing to the eradication of this terrible crime.

What is human trafficking?

Human trafficking is one of the biggest crimes of international scope that is currently taking place. It has criminal, violent and economic connotations, related to the systematic violation of human rights, gender and migration; there is no country that is not affected by it, and its victims are women, men, girls and boys.

The Global Organized Crime Index, developed by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime (GI-TOC), compiles the 15 most important criminal markets in the world. The analysis conducted by GI-TOC in its 2021 Index shows how human trafficking ranked as the world’s most lucrative criminal market, behind it, the cannabis trade and arms trafficking. Two years later, in the 2023 Index, financial crime takes first place, leaving it in an equally alarming second position.

Despite its far-reaching scope, it is a relatively recent crime in its international profiling, as it is only in 2000 that the United Nations, in the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in Persons Especially Women and Children, supplementing the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime, developed an international definition for it:

Article 3, section a): «Trafficking in persons» shall mean the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harbouring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of exploitation. Exploitation shall include, at a minimum, the exploitation of the prostitution of others or other forms of sexual exploitation, forced labour or services, slavery or practices similar to slavery, servitude or the removal of organs

In order to consider that a crime is identified as human trafficking, we must take into account the three material means that this crime possesses:

Have you ever been curious about the development of human trafficking and migrant smuggling? Are you interested in knowing the implications and impact of their commissions, prevention and detection on an international scale? Perhaps you would like to learn about different protection mechanisms for their victims if you are already a working professional in this area.
